We Who Will Die by Stacie Stark

Overall:
We Who Will Die had no right to pull me in as fast as it did, but here we are. I went in with “okay, let’s see what this is about” energy and came out fully invested in this world and these characters. This was such a strong start to a series, the kind that makes you immediately want to grab the next book because the foundations are that good. The world-building? Chef’s kiss. Everything felt vivid, layered, and intentional. I was completely immersed, like I’d been dropped straight into this Roman-inspired world and told to survive. Easy 4.5/5 stars for me, and I will 100% be continuing this series.

Characters:
Arvelle… I love her. She’s one of those main characters who carries so much weight on her shoulders that you can feel it as a reader. She’s complex, flawed, stubborn at times, and constantly forced to make impossible choices. But that’s exactly what made her so compelling. Being in her point of view was such a good experience. You really understand her fears, her anger, her sense of duty, and even when she messes up, you get why she does what she does. She felt human. And yes, I enjoyed the love triangle (which is saying a lot because I’m usually not a love triangle defender). I’m obviously team older mysterious brother. I don’t make the rules, I just follow my heart.

Atmosphere:
The Roman-inspired world? Obsessed. The setting, the politics, the danger in the air — everything felt immersive and heavy in the best way. There’s this constant tension running through the story that keeps you on edge, like something bad could happen at any moment (and usually does). The world-building was one of the strongest parts of the book for me — it felt lived-in, brutal, and fascinating. I could picture everything so clearly, which just made the stakes hit harder.

Overall, this was such a solid start to a series. The world is rich, the main character is easy to get attached to, and the atmosphere pulls you in and doesn’t let go. I’m officially invested and emotionally preparing myself for whatever this series is going to put me through next.
